Course Overview: 

The Level 3 Diploma for Sustainable Recycling Activities underpins a broad range of occupational roles in the collection, transport, treatment and final management of waste and resources.

The Level 3 Diploma is aimed at a range of occupational job roles including:

  • Sustainability Officer
  • Refuse Collection Supervisor (Team Leader)
  • Recycling Collection Supervisor (Team Leader)
  • Treatment (Physical / Chemical or Thermal) Supervisor
  • Materials Recycling Facility/Household Waste Recycling Centre Supervisor
  • Transfer Station Supervisor
  • Biological Treatment (In-Vessel Composting / Open Windrow / Anaerobic Digestion) Supervisor
  • Landfill Supervisor

Achievement of the qualification demonstrates competence by the learner to operate appropriately and in accordance with employment requirements whilst undertaking team leader/supervisory roles in the recycling Industry. It is assessed ‘on-the-job’ and learning will take place naturally as part of the normal working environment and routine.

Entry Requirements: 

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, though candidates will need to be employed in a suitable position, as it is assessed ‘on-the-job’.

We and employers must be confident that the potential candidate has the learning potential/capacity, motivation and aptitude to achieve all of the mandatory outcomes of the framework.

Course Delivery: 

The structure of the qualification has been designed to enable complete flexibility across the sustainable recycling roles at a team leader/supervisory level. This qualification is also part of the Level 3 Sustainable Waste Management Apprenticeship.

The qualifications aim is to develop occupational competence in a wide range of job roles and to provide a structured route to job competence and career progression.

This qualification covers:

  • Risk assessments
  • Environmental good practice
  • Team objectives
  • Personal performance
  • Managing the collection, storage, processing and dispatch of materials
  • Generation of business
  • Customer relations
  • Security
  • Support learning and development

To achieve the full qualification candidates must complete all mandatory units (6 units).

  • Set objectives and provide support for team members
  • Plan, allocate and monitor work of a team
  • Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace
  • Develop and implement a risk assessment plan in own area of responsibility
  • Promote sustainability and environmental good practice in the recycling industry
  • Develop personal performance

Candidates must then choose either the general pathway or the reuse pathway. The minimum number of credits required to achieve the qualification is 46.

An assessor will visit the candidate’s workplace to observe their work ‘on-the-job’. The candidate will compile a ‘portfolio of evidence’ which will demonstrate that they have the knowledge and competence necessary to meet the standard set in the qualification.

Progression Opportunities: 

The qualification leads to the WAMITAB Level 4 Recycling qualifications and is part of the Sustainable Resource Management Apprenticeship.
 

Additional Information: 

The faculty is represented by tutors who have all previously worked at management level within the sustainable resource industry. Our tutors hold qualifications in waste management and recycling and currently work with a wide variety of organisations providing training to both the public, private and third sector.
