Preparing for Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care - Level 4 Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship is a fully-funded, knowledge-based qualification which aims to prepare learners for a managerial role. It will enable learners to develop and demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding in the context of health and social care settings.
In particular, learners will be able to demonstrate that they:
- Understand a range of leadership and management concepts, theories and techniques
- Understand different leadership and management styles, and how they influence practice within services
- Understand how to lead person/child-centred approaches in practice
- Are capable of working as effective and independent leaders, and as critical, reflective thinkers to make informed judgements, including using and interpreting data
- Have an awareness of how to lead, manage and improve service within health and social care
The Level 4 apprenticeship will take 12-24 months to complete, and provides a stepping stone opportunity for learners wanting to progress to a Level 5 qualification.
Who is the apprenticeship for?
The apprenticeship is designed for learners primarily in paid or unpaid employment, or who have access to a work placement. It is suitable for learners who are aspiring managers who are not yet in a leadership and management role within the sector.
This apprenticeship is also suitable to those who:
- Have successfully completed a Level 2 Health and Social Care, or a recognised equivalent
- Have successfully completed Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults), or a recognised equivalent
- Have successfully completed Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Children and Young People), or a recognised equivalent
- Have successfully completed Advanced GCE in Health and Social Care, and Childcare
The apprenticeship will be delivered in a classroom environment, and is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessments.
As part of the external assessment, learners must successfully complete:
- A project that contains a written report, presentation and discussion, centred around a proposed change to practice
For the internal assessment, learners must successfully complete:
- A series of tasks, involving both oral and written responses
Units
The Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care apprenticeship consists of the following three units:
- Legislation, theories and models of person/child-centred practice
- Theoretical frameworks for leadership and management
- Leadership and management of effective team performance in health and social care services

Featured Course
The programme will be delivered through a series of 7 structured workshops, which will give the student underpinning knowledge for the assignments. This will be delivered at the employers premises. This will be supplemented by ongoing individual tutorial support and NVQ completion.
