Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Translation Practice
This framework is designed to meet the skills needs of employers of all sizes across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in Wales.
There are two separate pathways within the Level 4 Apprenticeship in Interpreting and Translation to provide learners with an opportunity to develop their practice as an interpreter or translator. This will assist learners to go on to a career in their chosen discipline and be able to progress to qualifications that will enable them to gain professional status. At Gower College Swansea, we currently offer the Translation Practice pathway on a fully funded basis* for those living and working in Wales.
Please note: The Apprenticeship has been designed for those in Translator roles; candidates for this apprenticeship will require strong language skills in both the source and target languages (i.e. Welsh and English) and also have experience of translation based activities. The apprenticeship is ideal for those who wish to seek recognition of these skills.
We would require a pre-course meeting with you and your employer to discuss the course and to establish that this level and course content is suitable. We will also check that the learner has the ability to demonstrate competence in working practices within their current work role and has the necessary language skills as explained above.
The Higher Apprenticeship Framework at Level 4 consists of the following qualifications:
1. Level 4 Certificate in Translation Practice (QCF/NVQ) Agored Cymru - 601/5761/6
The QCF/ NVQ mandatory units:
• Ethics in interpreting and translation practice
• Principles of Language use and variation
• Develop and maintain translation skills
• Manage translation commissions
• Translate written texts
• Enhancing own performance as a translator
The course is delivered via blended learning by a qualified tutor / assessor. Delivery is available via face to face workplace visits and / or remotely for individuals / groups. Specific delivery models can be discussed and agreed with employers before commencement of course.
2. Essential Skills (Wales) City and Guilds –
Level 2 in Communication, Application of Numbers and Digital Literacy
(NB - Proxies may apply for those who hold and present English / Welsh and Maths certificates) Classes are delivered by experienced and dedicated Essential Skills Tutors
3. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Workbook
Typical Job title(s) / Job role(s)
Junior Translator or Translator:
Duties involve:
translating written documents from one language to another accurately and
with cultural sensitivity; maintaining terminology databases; using specialist
reference books; proof reading; research and translation software.
NB - Junior translators will need to be supervised by a senior translator.
N.B. Progression into this higher apprenticeship may be from a number of routes due to the varying backgrounds, past academic and work related experiences. Such routes will include having:
• achieved QCF Certificates or Diplomas at Level 3 in a chosen language
• achieved ‘A’ Levels
• achieved Extended Diploma
• achieved a Welsh Baccalaureate, including a pass in the Core
• worked in interpreting or translation support roles
Learners will need to meet the framework entry requirements to progress into this Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Translation Practice.
After completing this course learners can complete additional learning to go on to more senior roles and move towards professional recognition through such things as:
• Interpreting professional qualification at Level 5 or above
• Interpreting or language based qualifications at a Higher Educational Institution
• Professional recognition through specialist qualifications Police, public service.
Course Start Date and Duration:
Start dates can be at any time of the year – subject to availability. Maximum 24 months duration.
This is a fully funded Higher Apprenticeship - subject to eligibility criteria

Also it’s an ideal course for more experienced translators and it can be used to upskill existing translators and enhance their CPD records. The knowledge element of the QCF/NVQ will require some research of general translation practices and the course will require reflection on current workplace practices and will provide translators with scope to showcase work commissions undertaken. –
