Health and Social Care: Practice - Level 2 Apprenticeship

Course Overview:

This apprenticeship is fully-funded and practice-based, which will assess learners' knowledge and competence to practice. It develops the learners' ability to practically support the health and care needs of adults in a range of settings, and will enable them to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, behaviours, skills and practice within a health and social care setting.

In particular learners will be able to demonstrate that they:

  • understand, and can apply in practice, the principles and values which underpin health and social care
  • understand, and can apply in practice, person-centred approaches
  • make a positive contribution to the health and social care sector though their own practice
  • reflect on practice to continuously improve
  • understand job roles and ways of working within the health and social care sector
  • can use literacy, numeracy and digital competency skills as appropriate within their role

The Level 2 apprenticeship will take 6 months to complete, and will be delivered within a
classroom environment.

Who is the apprenticeship for?

The apprenticeship is suitable for:

  • learners 16+ who are working in a support role with adults in the Healthcare and Social Care Sectors
  • learners who have completed the Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core qualification
  • learners already employed in the Healthcare and Social Care Sectors
  • learners returning to the work place after a career break who are looking to refresh their knowledge and skills
  • learners who have completed the Level 2 Health and Social Care: Principles and Contexts (Adults) qualification

It is strongly encouraged that learners have completed the core qualification prior to, or alongside, the Level 2 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults), as this will be a requirement set by Social Care Wales. It is also a feature of the Foundation Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care.

Course Delivery:

This qualification contains a single mandatory and a range of optional units that are linked to specific types of support or health and social care settings.

To achieve the Level 2 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults) qualification, learners must achieve a minimum of 35 credits in total:

  • 14 credits must be achieved from the mandatory unit
  • a minimum of 21 credits will be selected from the suite of optional units, which includes units about direct support and healthcare

The mandatory content of the qualification is aligned to the key themes of the All Wales Induction Framework for Health and Social Care, and includes:

  • professional practice
  • health and safety
  • safeguarding
  • legislation, national policy and codes of practice
  • health and well-being (adults)
  • a range of practice areas such as dementia or learning disability

The learner must successfully complete:

  • a portfolio of evidence that includes direct observation of practice
  • externally set, internally assessed tasks

Assessment

The apprenticeship will be internally assessed through a series of assessment activities:

  • a set of structured tasks used to gather assessment evidence for the majority of the mandatory content, and to provide a framework for collection of the required evidence for units selected from optional group A. The tasks will consist of candidates being observed planning four separate activities, as well as conducting these activities and their evaluation
  • a portfolio of evidence for any units/outcomes that are not likely to be observed through the structured tasks or covered during the discussion. This will include underpinning elements from within the mandatory content, where evidence is likely to come from that observed in or inherent in day-to-day practice. The portfolio will also include evidence from the optional group B units, where evidence cannot be gathered readily from within the framework of tasks
  • the assessment approach will be finalised by an assessor-led discussion to provide a final touchpoint for the assessor and the candidate at the end of the assessment process. This discussion aims to consolidate any areas of evidence not satisfied through the structured tasks or portfolio

Units

  • Professional practice
  • Health and safety
  • Health and well-being (adults)
  • Safeguarding
  • A range of practice areas such as dementia or learning disability
  • Legislation, national policy and codes of practice

There is a wide range of optional units available for this apprenticeship, with the full list accessible on the Health and Care Learning Wales website.
