Overview

Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points will provide learners with an in-depth insight into the application of the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation.

It provides a facility for individuals working in the electrotechnical sector to develop their understanding of the installation of electric vehicles, and will cover the core skills required to install, fault find, inspect and test electric vehicle charging points.

This is a new sector where electricians can train to become a specialist installer.

Key information

Learners must be competent electricians, hold a relevant qualification with the relevant AM test (e.g. AM2/S/E/D), as well as have passed an Inspection and Testing course. A copy of your certificate must be supplied prior to undertaking the qualification.

Learners must also have full working knowledge of the following requirements:

  • Be able to correctly install and terminate pvc/pvc cable (twin and earth), as well as steel wire armoured cable
  • Know the different earthing installation requirements e.g. TT, TNS, TNCS
  • Be able to carry out an initial verification (inspection and testing) on an electrical installation and complete the necessary paperwork

Please note that the competencies are required for the assessment and will not be taught as part of the qualification. It is expected that learners possess relevant trade qualifications and/or have a working knowledge of the electrical industry.

Each application is considered on individual merit, however formal qualifications may not be required depending on experience.

The course will be delivered over two days at Gower College Swansea’s Energy Centre, based at Tycoch Campus. It will consist of a practical installation of an EV charging unit supported by classroom instruction, a practical assessment as well as a one hour open book online examination.

Learners will be required to bring the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations+ (5th edition) to the course.
