Overview

This qualification provides an introduction to the Waste and Recycling sector. It underpins a broad range of occupational roles in the collection transport, treatment and final management of waste and resources, as well as covers the wide range of knowledge needed to work at operative level on waste management sites.

The qualification provides the skills required by operatives to work in accordance with recycling industry requirements for collection, reception and segregation, processing as well as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycling (WEEE) activities.

Key information

The qualification will be delivered through a mixture of learning in the workplace, classroom delivery which can be face-to-face or online, as well as one-to-one sessions with your tutor.

The programme can be delivered flexibly, to suit the needs of the learner and employer.

Mandatory units

  • How to work safely within the waste/recycling industry
  • Understand environmental protection in the waste and recycling industry
  • How to identify and resolve disagreements
  • Understand the principles of the waste/recycling industry
  • Understand the principles of identifying and classifying waste
  • Understand the ‘Duty of Care’ within the waste/recycling industry
  • ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) in the energy and utility sector

Optional units

Learners can choose from a variety of optional units, including:

  • Understand the reasons and targets for recycling
  • Understand management systems
  • Know about waste treatment technologies
  • Technical aspects of managing waste and resources
  • How to identify and record hazardous waste
  • Understand environmental permitting in England and Wales
  • Perform street cleansing mechanically
