Overview

This qualification is suitable for managers and supervisors in all industry sectors who have a responsibility for health and safety who wish to develop their skills. It is also suitable for those who are new to a health and safety role, or health and safety practitioners who wish to progress their career with a recognised qualification. 

The qualification will provide learners with essential occupational health and safety knowledge and skills, including conducting risk assessments, introducing procedures, as well as promoting a positive health and safety culture in the workplace.

It meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). 

Key information

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however a short meeting will be required to discuss the course content and establish whether the level is suitable for the learner.

The short meeting will also discuss whether the candidates can demonstrate the competence needed within their role, due to performance on the job being the main basis for assessment.

To successfully complete the qualification, learners will need to complete all the mandatory units:

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Develop procedures to safely control work operations
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Promote a culture of health and safety in the workplace
  • Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace

Learners will also be required to complete two optional units from the following list:

  • Investigate and evaluate health and safety incidents and complaints in the workplace
  • Make sure actions in the workplace aim to protect the environment
  • Review health and safety procedures in the workplace
  • Supervise the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners can progress to:

  • NVQ Occupational Health and Safety Practice (City and Guilds) – Level 5
  • National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (NEBOSH)

This qualification is competency-based, delivered through work-based learning. There are no examinations involved, with assessments carried out through a variety of methods such as observations, witness testimonies and more. 

There will be opportunities for learners to carry out risk assessments, develop safe systems of work, devise or delivery health and safety training, and carry out safety inspections or accident investigations.

Non-UK citizens will be required to provide their proof of residency status, with documents required to be emailed along with completion/signing by the learner of a College enrolment form no later than one week prior to the commencement of the course. This is to allow our International department to check funding eligibility. If learners are not eligible for Welsh Government funding, they will have the option to pay the course fee or withdraw from the course.
